Dealectica Picks is a completely subjective weekly feature in which I pick 5 of my favorite items in a given category. If you travel often, you might already be familiar with solid shampoo bars. In a world where attempting to bring a full-size shampoo bottle on board an airplane makes you a security threat, solid shampoo is a godsend. And no worries about the bottle opening up in your bag either! If you’re wondering how to use solid shampoo bars, you simply work up a lather in your hands and apply it to your hair or run the bar back and forth through your hair a few times. Most bars lather really well and, apart from being solid, don’t perform any differently than liquid shampoo.
My favorite thing about shampoo bars, and the reason I use them, is that they last longer than bottled shampoo, saving me money. They cut down on waste too. Most either come unpackaged (like those sold at Lush) or in a reusable tin container. Have I sold you on the benefits of shampoo bars yet? If so, here are my picks for best solid shampoos.
Orange Sherbet Shampoo Bar [Red Leaf] // I hated this bar at first, but then I realized, it’s so potent that you only need a teeny tiny bit. Red Leaf has a variety of interesting scents like Lettuce, Black Tea, and Basil Lime. Lovely!
Dr. Peppermint [Lush] // I love peppermint shampoos. Something about them really helps wake me up in the morning. The scent of this bar has a little more depth to it with the addition of spearmint and black pepper oils too.
One Shampoo Bar Hair Biscuit [Amazon] // This is a shampoo bar that’s sold at a lot of major retailers. It’s less expensive than a lot of other brands, which I appreciate.
Trichomania Shampoo [Lush] // This is my favorite! Although it’s formulated for curly hair, I’m prone to really dried out hair during the winter and this shampoo is mega-moisturizing. And it smells like the tropics!
J.R. Liggett Tea Tree & Hemp Oil Shampoo Bar [Amazon] // This bar is also affordable and it contains lots of moisturizing oils and fatty acids. It’s unscented for those who like to avoid strong-smelling shampoos.
Have you used solid shampoo before? What are your favorites?

Honestly, I’ve never heard of shampoo bars! What a great idea for travel especially if you are trying to stick with carry-ons. The peppermint scent would be my fave.

As someone who often drops the shampoo bottle resulting in a cracked cap or hates trying to get the last bit of shampoo from the bottle when I’m in a hurry these sound perfect.

I like this idea! If I don’t keep my shampoo bottles up high my 4 and 3 year old empty the bottles but a shampoo bar would be awesome!

Hmmm, I haven’t heard of these yet. I usually buy from http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/ and I’m getting ready to try http://www.jlmaysoapmakers.com/. I had also used Blue House soaps in the past.
